NAS Studio House is a conceptual design.
The National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney has historical significance as it is the site of the old Darlinghurst Gaol. The students study creative arts from pottery to painting and screen printing. The Studio House accomodates 2 on-site screen printers and performs as both living and display spaces.
The project analyses the existing strong radial arrangement of existing hertitage buildings and reinterprets them in this intervention. The free form building allows existing pedestrian patterns to be maintained between buildings through the screen printing space while accomodation and private spaces are at a mezzanine level. The cladding reinterprets the sandstone blocks of the old gaol and rearranges them to create a flexible façade system with transparent components that filter light into the space.
